Yes, the caged bird sings
Someday that cage door will be open
Someday she will get away
Someday she can be herself
Someday........

You, with the fist ...
Say and do what you will
Say all your evil things
Beat her spirit down
To the rest of us ...
she always sings

You bruise her skin
You try and destroy her soul
You do all you want ....
Your rage takes control

Behind closed doors these things go on
In silence, she always cries
We may not hear her
But we will know ....
When we look into her eyes

She is locked in a cage
But, she still sings a song
Our heart will tell us...
Something is very wrong

Don't turn your back
If you have some doubt
You may be the only one....
That can help her out

An abused woman
will always pretend
She will continue to sing
right till the end

She will never let you know
that she has cried
That's why she sings
Because the hurt, she must hide

But, if we help her......
She won't have to take it
ever again
That cage we can open
Someday, she'll win

They can't keep her caged forever
They can't keep her in the dark
Someday, she'll get away
A new life she will start

Yes, I know why the caged bird sings
One day she finally broke free
And when she did
She confided everything to me

If you suspect someone, young or old
are being abused
Don't turn away
Don't let their body and spirit continue
to be battered and bruised
