When I was a kid I just couldn't wait
to make my own money
Boy Oh Boy
My future was lookin'
bright and sunny

I studied really hard
'Cause I didn't want to be dumb
I wanted a good payin' job
Didn't want to be a bum

As I began to work
I found out it's a sham
Little did I know
I'd be workin' for Uncle Sam

Every time I got a raise
He got one too
How can I get ahead
Just what can I do

Get another job
Work twice as hard
Even joined the union
Got a union card

I had to make ends meet
I needed to do more
I was workin' 40 hours a week
to be this poor

And when I worked
lots of overtime
Uncle Sam said,

"Sure go ahead that'll be just fine"
Well, of course it's fine....
none of the extra money was mine

40 Hours
50 Hours
I worked hard for every cent
But....
Every time I looked at my bills
I hadn't made a dent

Extra money I earned
I never saw it in my check
Uncle Sam was sittin' pretty
I looked like a wreck

60 Hours
70 Hours
How can I keep this pace
I'm caught right in the middle
of this workin' rat race

I have worked for many years
I'm not a kid anymore
I checked my bank account
Dang if I ain't still poor

Uncle Sam got more of
my paycheck than me
Well, heck with workin'
I can finally see
'Cause I ain't dumb
I'm hittin' the road
I'm gonna be a bum
